Welcome to Aravali National Park

Proposed Jungle Safari in the Aravalli range near Gurgaon (Gurugram)—a massive initiative aiming to transform over 10,000 acres across Gurugram and Nuh into what could become the world’s largest curated safari park .

Project Overview

Scale & Land Details

  • The safari spans 10,000 acres, jointly located in Gurugram and Nuh districts, under lease for 33 years from local panchayats and the Municipal Corporation
  • Approximately 6,000 acres in Gurugram have already been earmarked, with remaining areas in Nuh under negotiation

Phased Development

  • Planned in four phases, the first phase covers 2,500 acres, with formalities expedited and completion targeted within two years

Key Features & Attractions

Expect a wildlife showcase and immersive experience, including:

  • Herpetarium (reptiles and amphibians), aviary (bird park), four zones for big cats, herbivore area, exotic birds, an underwater world, botanical gardens, and themed biomes—equatorial, tropical, coastal, and desert
  • Additional infrastructure includes a veterinary hospital and conservation center, double-door enclosures (as per Central Zoo Authority norms), and a visitor-friendly ecosystem design
  • Entry through four access gates: near Sohna on Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, Tauru–Sohna Road, Naurangpur, and Sakatpur
  • The establishment of an Aravalli Foundation to oversee project development, and implementation of a home-stay policy to benefit adjacent village communities
  • Aims include boosting tourism, generating employment, promoting ecology-based education, conserving biodiversity, recharging groundwater, and serving as a "living laboratory" for environmental awareness

Ecological Context & Compliance

  • Emphasis on planting native species, ensuring minimal environmental disruption, and improving habitat for local wildlife and biodiversity
  • The project is considered an innovative approach to conserving a politically and ecologically fragile region of the Aravallis

Controversies & Environmental Concerns

While seen as ambitious, the project has drawn environmentalists’ criticisms:

  • Location falls under areas designated as protected forest, where construction is heavily restricted and may violate existing forest laws and Supreme Court orders
  • Concerns over disruption to ecological systems, adverse impacts on wildlife, water scarcity, and potential ill effects of captive animals mingling with native free-ranging species
  • Environmentalists have even raised legal challenges and filed petitions questioning the project’s legality

Eco-Restoration & Broader Conservation Context

  • Parallel to the safari efforts, the Haryana government is aggressively pursuing environmental restoration through the Aravali Green Wall and landscape rejuvenation initiatives:
  • 853 hectares marked for restoration through sapling planting, agroforestry, and green belts
  • Long-term plan to revive 37,017 hectares across the Aravali region, combating desertification and degrading scrublands through native species planting and ecological interventions
  • Phase 1 of the Green Wall project targeting 24,990 hectares, launched with World Environment Day, focusing on degraded forest land across five districts
  • However, recent reports highlight risks like drying watering holes threatening wildlife corridors in Gurgaon, underlining the fragile state of these ecosystems
  • Efforts are also underway to eliminate illegal encroachments, with the NGT-led demolitions of unauthorised farmhouses in protected zones

The Aravalli Jungle Safari represents an audacious vision—creating a mega safari that blends conservation, recreation, and ecological restoration. If implemented responsibly, it could significantly uplift biodiversity, local communities, and tourism. However, the project must navigate thorny issues of legality, ecological sensitivity, and long-term sustainability.
